A dictionary is a book containing alphabetically listed words and their definitions and parts of speech. Many dictionaries also contain pronunciation, origin, and date of first known use. Basic dictionaries have been found as far back as 2300 BC in ancient Mesopotamia. The first reliable and well-known English language dictionary was Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language.
