Homer is the poet who wrote the Odyssey and the Illiad, two of the greatest epic poems of ancient times and the foundations of a great deal of western literature. Little is known about Homer's life, although tradition has it that he was blind. There is even some dispute as to whether a single Homer ever existed, or whether 'his' poems were fixed over time from an earlier oral tradition.
