Books of Kings
The First and Second Books of Kings are two books of the Bible, which are grouped alongside the other historical books in the Old Testament. They give an account of Israelite history from the end of the reign of King David to the conquest of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. This is the same period covered by the Books of Chronicles, but whereas Chronicles concentrates mainly on the southern kingdom of Judah, Kings focuses on the northern kingdom of Israel. Kings also gives a much more prominent role to the prophets, and in particular, many stories of Elijah and Elisha can be found therein.
The books are so called because they chronicle the only period of history when the Israelites were a sovereign nation ruled by their own kings. Before this period they were a group of loosely affiliated tribes presided over by judges, and after it they subject to the rule of a succession of powerful empires.
The First Book of Kings (or 1 Kings or I Kings) covers the period from the end of David's reign until Jehoshapat's succession by Ahaziah.
The Second Book of Kings (or 2 Kings or II Kings) covers the period from the reign of Ahaziah until the conquest of Jerusalem by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar.
